The King Theater project in Belle Plaine is the latest in a series of BDG activities that have delivered more than $1.6 million for Benton County using CATALYST Grants and disaster recovery funds. Other projects funded with CATALYST grants include the Tap Haus in Atkins and renovations of the building now home to Cranky Hanks Pizza in Shellsburg.
Benton Development Group is encouraging Benton County communities to attend CATALYST Grant information meetings as the first step in securing funding for housing and the repair of downtown buildings. Past meeting attendees have scored better on applications, which increases funding success.
“Successful funding depends on locating a suitable building, finding a developer, and the active involvement of the city government,” explains BDG Executive Director Kate Robertson. “BDG can help at every step of the process, but securing funds depends most on community leaders attending a pre-application meeting. Every community in Benton County has buildings that could successfully be renovated to improve affordable housing and create economic vitality, so we hope our communities will be well represented at the Williamsburg meeting.”
The Iowa Economic Development Authority (IEDA) provides grants through the Community Catalyst Building Remediation Program to communities to redevelop and rehab vacant or underutilized buildings to stimulate economic growth or reinvestment in the community.
